Genital herpes

  • Genital herpes has fewer symptoms and will form blisters that break open and result in ulcers that heal within 2 to 4 weeks. Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV 1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV 2).

Herpes causes

Herpes causes

HSV symptoms can be transmitted from one person to another person through direct contact with the moist skin like the mouth, genitals, and anus. Herpes causes oral or genital episodes of HVS symptoms.

The HSV symptoms will spread through contact with other areas of the skin and eyes. The herpes infection will not spread through touching an object or surface like a washbasin or towel.

Herpes infection can occur in the following ways:

  • Intercourse with vaginal or anal sex without using protection like a condom

  • Using same sex toys

  • Having direct contact of oral or genitals with a person with herpes infection

The herpes virus is most contagious at the time when symptoms first appear and when they first heal. The presence of genital herpes symptoms during the delivery of a mother can pass the virus to the baby

Herpes symptoms

The herpes symptoms are common in the infections that occur on the face, mouth (orofacial herpes), genitalia (genital herpes), or hands (herpetic whitlow).

The more severe infections occur in the eye (herpes keratitis) and brain (herpes encephalitis). People with a less or suppressed immune system, suffering from disorders like HIV are more prone to complications of HSV symptoms and infections.

Herpes symptoms

Herpes infection does not have any symptoms or signs in the initial stages so it is unidentified in most people. The herpes symptoms may start from day two to 12 days after the herpes infection. The symptoms may include-

  • Pain or itching- You will have pain and tenderness near your genitals until the herpes cure

  • Herpes rash- The red bumps and tiny white blisters may appear a few days after infection

  • Herpes blisters- The herpes ulcers are formed when herpes blisters are ruptured and ooze or bleed causing pain during urination

  • Scabs- Skin will crust and form scabs after the herpes ulcer heals.

  • Vaginal discharge is observed in the female genital herpes symptoms

  • Tender lumps are seen in the groin of males as genital herpes symptoms

Other herpes symptoms include flu-like symptoms with swollen lymph nodes in the groin, headache, muscle pain, fever, and herpes lesions.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will do a physical test to observe the herpes blisters, herpes lesions, and genital sores. Your doctor will do a culture of fluid extracted from a sore and do a test for herpes skin disease reason symptoms. Even a blood test can be done on the fluid extracted from the herpes blister.

Physical examination

  • A physical examination is conducted by your doctor for primary orofacial herpes with no history of herpes lesions and with direct contact with HSV infection.

  • The appearance of sores is present as multiple, round, superficial oral ulcers. It is difficult to diagnose adults with the absence of herpes symptoms. In the absence of mouth lesions, primary orofacial herpes is mistaken as a bacterial infection.

  • Genital sores are difficult to diagnose compared to oral herpes as both lack herpes symptoms. Fungal infections, lichen planus, atopic dermatitis, and urethritis have similar genital herpes symptoms.

Laboratory test

  • Genital sores of herpes are always confirmed by a laboratory test. Direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) studies include culture of the virus to detect virus, skin biopsy, and polymerase chain reaction to detect the presence of viral DNA.

  • Even though these tests are specific and highly sensitive the cost and time limit their regular use in clinical practice.

Differential diagnosis

To avoid the confusion between symptoms of another Herpesviridae family, the differential diagnosis includes hand, foot, and mouth disease due to similar lesions on the skin.

Prevention of harpies disease

Prevention of harpies disease
  • The herpes prevention tip for HSV symptoms is not to have sex with people with herpes skin disease. Herpes skin disease can be spread to a person without any symptoms. If your partner has herpes, you may have a chance of getting harpies disease.

  • Women are more susceptible to acquiring the herpes simplex 2 virus. The reports show the spread of about 8-11% of herpes simplex 2 virus from infected males to females and 4-5 % from infected females to males annually.

  • Avoid kissing and oral sex when you have herpes sores, herpes ulcers, and herpes blisters around the mouth. Always wash your hands after touching the infected area during an outbreak.

Antivirals

The use of antivirals will also help in herpes prevention and the development of herpes symptoms. Antivirals will reduce the asymptomatic shedding.

Barrier methods

There is no time to avoid harpies disease during sex, so it is better to tell your sex partner about your condition. It is better to avoid sex if you have genital sores or herpes blisters. Condoms will protect you against the herpes simplex 2 virus in both men and women and lowers the risk by 30%.

You should always use protection like condoms during sex if you have genital sores. Genital herpes is caused due to unprotected sex with a person with herpes skin disease. But the use of condoms does not completely protect you from herpes skin disease.

Pregnancy

The risk of transmission of herpes infection from mother to baby during delivery. To prevent neonatal infections from seronegative mothers, it is advised to avoid unprotected oral or genital contact with an infected person.

The use of antiviral herpes treatment such as acyclovir will reduce the HSV symptoms recurrence and shedding during delivery. The use of acyclovir, valaciclovir, and famciclovir can improve compliance but is less safe in pregnancy.

Treatment for harpies disease

There is no permanent herpes cure but can be treated with medications like antivirals.

Herpes treatment with Antivirals

The herpes treatment includes the use of acyclovir, valaciclovir, famciclovir, and penciclovir. There is evidence to support the use of acyclovir and valacyclovir in the treatment of herpes labialis and herpes infections in cancer patients. But the use of acyclovir in primary herpetic gingivostomatitis has weak evidence.

Genital herpes treatment involves the use of three major herpes medicines- acyclovir, valaciclovir, and famciclovir. The genital herpes treatment with acyclovir involves the use of an intravenous (IV) injection.

Herpes simplex 2 treatment can relieve herpes symptoms, decrease the pain, and shorten healing time. Also, herpes simplex 2 treatment at home includes a warm bath that relieves pain associated with genital sores.

Topical herpes treatment

Topical antivirals lie in acyclovir, penciclovir, and docosanol are effective for herpes labialis treatment.

The use of other compounds like echinacea, eleuthero, L-lysine, zinc, monolaurin bee products, and aloe vera have proved evidence in the herpes treatment.
