Eyes are often called the window of our soul. When meeting someone, the first thing we see in a person is their eyes. Eyes play a significant role in developing our overall personality. But due to several factors such as tiredness, stress, getting old, and genetics can cause dark circles under the eyes. These dark circles around the eyes make us look older and also unhealthy or ill, which lowers down our self-esteem to a greater extent.
The most delicate and thin skin is around our eyes. It is four times thinner than the rest of the body's skin. That's why it is easier to see the dark blood vessels under the surface of the eyes. The damaged blood vessels can cause blood to leak out, which results in a dark skin tone around the eyes. It can combine with fluid retention around the eyes, which makes the condition worse and more prominent.
Several factors are held responsible for the formation of dark circles around the eyes. Some of them are as follows:
As we get old, our skin becomes thinner and wrinkled. Aging becomes one of the most common causes of dark circles. During aging, one also loses the collagen and fat required to maintain the suppleness and elasticity of the skin. With this, the dark blood vessels situated beneath the skin become more prominent and visible, causing the skin beneath the eyes to look darker.
Extreme fatigue, tiredness, oversleeping, or not getting enough sleep can also cause dark circles around the eyes. Staying up awake and not sleeping adequately makes the skin pale and dull, resulting in the appearance of blood vessels and dark tissues under the eyes. Inadequate sleep or disruptive sleeping pattern also causes fluid accumulation under the eyes and makes them look puffy.
Dryness of the eyes and allergic reactions can also trigger dark circles. In case of an allergy, the body releases a chemical messenger called histamine to combat pathogenic bacteria. It causes symptoms like redness, itchiness, puffy eyes, and dilates the blood vessels, thereby making them more prominent under the skin of your eyes. An allergic reaction also urges you to scratch and rub the skin around the eyes. This can make the condition worse by causing swelling, inflammation, and damaged blood vessels. These all lead to darker skin around the eyes.
Drinking less water than required is one of the most common causes of dark circles. When the body does not receive sufficient water, the skin around the eyes begins to look hollow and dull.
Spending too much time in front of the television, computer, or mobile phones can significantly cause an effect and strain the eyes. Eye strain can cause enlargement of the blood vessels around the eyes. This results in the appearance of dark circles around the eyes.
When someone spends long hours outdoors, it causes the body to produce excessive melanin- a pigment responsible for providing color to the skin. Overexposure to the sun can cause darker pigments on the skin surrounding the eyes.
Dark circles around the eyes are also an inherited trait. If someone in your family had dark circles, then you can probably get it. The genetic predispositions are generally visible during childhood which can slowly disappear or worsen as you age. Inheritance of various other medical conditions like thyroid disease can also cause dark circles around the eyes.
Appropriate treatment can be selected based on the understanding of the development of dark circles. Changing lifestyle habits, trying some home remedies, medical treatment, and beauty products are all helpful in getting rid of dark circles. Although it must be noted that one cannot make the dark circles disappear altogether quickly, it requires time, consistent treatment, and patience.
Lack of sleep or low-quality sleep is a common cause of getting dark circles. Less sleep also makes you look pale, which may make the appearance of your dark circles more prominent and darker. You should get at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night to get brighter eyes, good mental and physical health, and of course, diminished dark circles around the eyes.
Dark circles around the eyes can be reduced by protecting the skin from direct exposure to the sun. UV rays from the sun can sometimes worsen the dark circles. Try wearing sunglasses, sunscreen creams, and hats to protect your skin from the sun when stepping outdoors.
Some people experience darkening of the skin around the eyes in the morning, which slightly fades away after some time. These people may have more blood vessels around their eyes. The dark skin color beneath the eyes can also result from swelling. Try elevating your head a little while sleeping; this will make the blood travel away from the face, thereby reducing the swelling and lessening the dark circles beneath the eyes. You can use extra pillows and cushions under your head for elevation.
Applying cold compresses can help shrink the dilated blood vessels and reduce the swellings. This will diminish the puffiness around the eyes and reduce the visibility of dark circles. Cold compresses can be beneficial for people having more blood vessels under their eyes.
Method: For this, wrap a few pieces of ice cubes in a clean handkerchief and dab it on your eyes. You can also dip a piece of clean cloth in cold water and apply it to the skin around the eyes. Repeat the process until the ice melts or the cloth becomes warm.
Tea is loaded with antioxidants and caffeine, both of which can help in stimulating blood circulation, shrinking the blood vessels, and reducing the retained liquid around the eyes. Applying cold tea bags on the eyes can thereby help in reducing the dark circles.
Method: Soak two caffeinated tea bags (black tea/green tea) in hot water for a few minutes. Chill the bag in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. When cold, place the tea bags on each eye for around 20-30 minutes. Rinse your eyes with fresh and cold water after that.
Applying slices of cucumber also helps in reducing the dark circles around the eyes. It also soothes the skin and makes you feel fresh. However, the mechanism of its effect is not known fully; the cold cucumber may reduce swelling and dark circles that are formed as a result of eczema, allergies, and lack of sleep.
Method: Refrigerate a few thick cucumber slices and then place them on your eyes for ten minutes. Rinse it off with cold water. Repeat it twice a day.
Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, and almond oil is loaded with lots of skin-friendly nutrients. A combination of both is known to protect the skin around the eyes and photoaging.
Method: Gently massage an equal amount of vitamin E and almond oil around the eyes just before going to sleep. Wash it with cold water after getting up in the morning. Repeat this process every night until the dark circles are gone.
The collagen production is increased by vitamin C, which can reduce the blood stasis under the eyes and enlightens the skin around the eyes. Blood that pools in vessels is referred to as blood stasis. Dark circles may lighten when people use vitamin C-rich food products (or cosmetics) such as orange peel, lemon juice, etc.
Method: Grind orange peel to make a fine powder. Now take two teaspoons of this dried powder and mix two teaspoons of rose water into it to make a paste. Apply the paste on the dark circles beneath the eye and gently scrub with the help of fingers. Leave it as it is for thirty minutes, and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
In a study, researchers evaluated the effect of vitamin K and caffeine for reducing the dark circles around the eyes. Their results demonstrated that the participants who received this treatment had reduced dark circles and wrinkles at the end of the study compared to the control. However, further studies are still needed to confirm its efficacy.
Method: Applying vitamin K-rich juices of pomegranate and tomatoes helps in reducing the dark circles. For best results, apply it daily on the skin under your eyes. You can also add vitamin K-rich food sources such as cauliflower, turnips, tomatoes, pomegranate, etc., to your diet for added benefits.
A wide range of moisturizers are available in the market that may help get rid of the dark circles around the eyes. Opt for moisturizers that contain Vitamin E, aloe vera, caffeine, retinol, and hyaluronic acid.
Applying creams containing retinoids helps in collagen production, which reduces the dark circles beneath the eyes. They are also found helpful in decreasing the production of melanin pigment. However, it should be noted that retinol-based creams are not suitable for everyone. Ask your skin care specialist before using any such products.
Some creams are specially designed for treating dark circles, which contain chemical compounds such as kojic acid, azelaic acid, glycolic acid, arbutin, and hydroquinone. These chemicals interrupt the production of skin pigment melanin and lighten the skin. Low concentrations of these chemicals are found to be effective. However, before using cosmetics containing these chemical compounds, consult your dermatologist or doctor as they can cause harmful side effects.
Although makeup cannot cure dark circles, they are still helpful in hiding it within no time. Concealers and foundations can hide the dark marks and blend them with the normal skin tone. Another type of cosmetics called optical diffusers reflects the light away from the skin and diminishes the visibility of dark circles. However, proper care is needed before using any cosmetic product. Some cosmetics can cause allergies and may worsen the symptoms. If you witness any irregularities, immediately stop its use and refer a good doctor or dermatologist.
Laser therapy uses heat energy to make the damaged cells vaporize. The target is made on the dark pigmented cells under the eyes. Laser treatment not only lightens the dark skin but also triggers the formation of collagen.
Dark pigmentation of the skin under the eyes can be cured by light chemical peel suggested by dermatologists. Jessner peel is also a similar treatment for this which includes a combination of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol.
Juvederm or Restylane are hyaluronic acid-based fillers. An ophthalmologist, plastic surgeon, or dermatologic surgeon injects these into the under-eye tissues. This treatment helps gain the lost volume of the under eyes and helps decrease the visibility of dark circles.
It is a surgical treatment used for correcting the defects, disfigurations, deformities of the eyelids, and also for aesthetical modifications of the eye. In the treatment of lid blepharoplasty, fat is surgically removed from the lower eyelid by an oculoplastic surgeon, plastic surgeon, or dermatologic surgeon. This procedure can decrease the shadow cast by the eyelid and thereby helps in the removal of dark circles.
Dark circles are temporary for most people and often indicate a lack of sleep and aging. Many home remedies, medical treatments, and cosmetics are available to decrease the visibility of dark circles and brighten up your eyes. Dark circles, however, do not cause any harm but if swelling or discoloration worsens with time, visit your doctor or dermatologist immediately to receive the best suggestion or treatment.
